Registrant Programs

Continuing Competency Program

The Health Professions Act requires that the college protects the public interest by superintending the practice of the profession. One of the ways in which to do this is to establish a Continuing Competency Program to assist registrants to assume professional accountability for maintaining and developing their own competency.

In the summer of 2006, the college released the first components of the program, which include a self-assessment tool and professional development plan plus a guide to help registrants complete the plan. The program will eventually include the following three elements:

  1. Competency Maintenance and Ongoing Development.
  2. Competency Review and Evaluation.
  3. Competency Improvement.

The Client Relations Committee makes recommendations to the board regarding programs for the prevention of misconduct of a sexual nature. These programs may include educational requirements for registrants, guidelines for conduct, and measures for addressing sexual misconduct. The college educates registrants and the public about this complex and sensitive concern to ensure registrants understand and manage boundary issues in professional practice. The COTBC formally investigates all sexual misconduct complaints or reports made against college registrants.

The first guidelines for conduct were published in September, 2006. These were designed to increase occupational therapists’ knowledge of the relationship between sexual misconduct and professional boundaries thereby identifying behaviours that may lead to sexual misconduct.
