When will I be able to work? How long does the registration process take?
Please plan for three to four weeks for processing of your registration. Foreign-trained occupational therapists moving to Canada should anticipate a minimum of four weeks processing time.
Once the Registration Committee has approved your registration, you will be able to begin work immediately as an occupational therapist. The Registration Committee generally meets the first Tuesday of each month.

Can I pay the application fee and registration fee by credit card?
No, payment is not accepted by credit card, payment for these fees may be made by cheque or money order.

I have a copy of my university transcript, can I submit this with my application for registration?
The transcript must be sent directly from the University or educational institution to the COTBC. You must provide documentation or a written statement verifying your official final transcript (which states degree in occupational therapy conferred or granted) is being forwarded by the educational institution directly to the COTBC. The College must have a copy of your transcript before your application for registration can be sent to the Registration Committee for approval.

How do I obtain professional liability insurance?
All registrants must be insured against liability for negligence in an amount of not less that one million dollars ($1,000,000) per occurrence. In BC, some employers do provide OT's with liability insurance that meets the COTBC requirements. Professional liability insurance may also be purchased through both the BCSOT (www.bcsot.org) or through the CAOT (www.caot.ca).

With regards to The Criminal Records Consent Form in the application, does the form get sent to COTBC or is it sent directly to the Minister of Finance?
Please complete the Criminal Records Consent form and send with your application to the COTBC. Please be sure to include the payment of $20.00 (payable to the Minister of Finance by certified cheque, money order or credit card payment) with your application.
For any other questions, please email or call the college.
