Printer Friendly Version About the COTBC

Welcome to the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC)

The COTBC is the governing body responsible for regulating the practice of occupational therapy in B.C. Occupational therapists MUST be registered with the college in order to legally practice and use the title "occupational therapist" or "OT" in British Columbia. Failure to register is an offence and can result in disciplinary action and/or fines.

We believe employers, occupational therapists, and clients all benefit from safe, effective, and ethical occupational therapy. The college is committed to ensuring the initial and ongoing competency of occupational therapists in British Columbia. Employers play an important role in helping the COTBC fulfill this mandate.

As health care service delivery continues to evolve, it is increasingly likely that occupational therapists will be employed and/or directly supervised by individuals who are not registered occupational therapists. The Essential Competencies of Practice for Occupational Therapists in Canada serve as a useful resource to help employers understand, assess, and support the competent practice of occupational therapy in their workplace.

As an employer, you can:

  • Provide opportunities for reflection and learning through forums and practice issue discussions; and
  • Support and encourage your occupational therapists to participate in professional development activities.
